The German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) currently sees insufficient evidence to classify the climate group Last Generation as extremist. That said BfV chairman Thomas Haldenwang of the editorial network Germany (Wednesday). The fact that the group sometimes acts criminally does not change that.
Haldenwang stressed: “The Bureau for the Protection of the Constitution is watching closely every day how the situation is developing.”
Treasury Secretary Lindner calls actions ‘very dangerous’
The group, founded at the end of 2021, blocked access roads to the motorway in Berlin for the first time on January 24 last year. Thereafter, with interruptions, such blockades followed almost daily, as well as protests in museums, stadiums, oil pipelines and airports. Among other things, the activists are calling for a general move away from fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal. Many politicians criticized the group’s actions. For example, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) called the group’s actions “extremely dangerous”.
