The zookeepers Laura and Silvia from Tiko Klagenfurt are currently being particularly challenged. They care for “Chip”, “Chap” and “Bloom”, three orphaned baby squirrels 24 hours a day.
Squirrels give birth as early as January. The little creatures then lie in their nests, called Kobeln, which the mother animals have built in forked branches or in tree hollows. Unfortunately, trees are also cut down in the spring and animal rights activists are therefore calling for a few days before planned felling to observe the tree to see if there is a nest in it.
Wait for the move
“Then it would be nice if you wait until the squirrel children and their mother have left the house,” emphasizes Nina Zesar of Tiko Klagenfurt. The same goes for bird nests.
Three squirrel kids are now homeless after a tree was cut down. Fortunately, the little ones were found and the animal rescue was notified. The animals – two females and one male – are now professionally raised by two specially trained animal caretakers from the Knowledge Center for Animal Welfare. These wild animals should only be cared for by experts. Still, it’s sad, because the mother must have been looking for the little ones.
Not to be kept as a pet
The squirrels should be about a month old. “You just opened your eyes. Our experts Laura and Silvia now have to take care of the little ones 24 hours a day and give them nursery milk, which means they have to get up several times during the night. Fortunately, they are developing very well,” emphasizes Nina Zesar When the little ones feed on their own, they are weaned back and prepared for their life in the wild. “Chip”, “Chap” and “Bloom” are then released into a safe and quiet environment. Squirrels should not be kept as pets.
