An explosion occurred in a house in central France on Wednesday during a police operation. A man who officers tried to arrest has died. Seven police officers were injured – three of them suffered severe burns.
The fatal incident happened around 1 p.m. at the home of the 38-year-old target in La Chapelle, near Clermont-Ferrand. According to French media, the man was currently on probation. An arrest warrant would have been issued against him for dangerous threats and attempted murder.

“We do not know the exact circumstances of this explosion at this time. According to the gendarmes, there was already a smell of petrol in the house when they arrived,” prosecutor Eric Neveu said in a statement. According to radio station France Info, the explosion occurred when the intervening officers handcuffed the 38-year-old.
