Italian researchers: – “Women in the Mafia as cold-blooded as men”

Date:

Women play an increasingly important role in the mafia. When their fathers, husbands or sons are imprisoned, they rise to the top floors of criminal organizations. Only Wednesday was the sister of a mafia boss in Naples sentenced to prison.

Maria Licciardi was sentenced to twelve years and eight months in prison for membership in the mafia, extortion and possession of stolen property. According to the Naples prosecutor, she leads a Camorra clan founded by her brother Gennaro. Licciardi was sentenced for the second time on Wednesday. The first verdict came about 20 years ago. At the time, the woman was also convicted of membership in the mafia, but the prison sentence was a bit less at ten years.

Money laundering and hiring killers
In 2021, she was finally arrested again before fleeing to Spain. Women play an increasingly important role in the top positions of the mafia, according to the study. When their fathers, husbands or sons are imprisoned, they rise to the top of the mafia. The clan bosses, who control the drug market, launder money and hire killers, are the mafia’s new ‘godmothers’.

They would act just as cold-blooded as their male relatives, the researchers said. As in the current case, it is often the sisters, but the wives also know the structures very well and are seen as less suspicious to the outside world.

About two months ago, the police managed to arrest Italy’s most wanted mafioso, Matteo Messina Denaro. He would have committed at least 50 murders.
