The American space agency NASA presented the new space suit for the moon landing mission “Artemis 3” on Wednesday. The suit, developed by the private company Axiom Space, is said to offer more flexibility and better thermal protection than the models used in the Apollo missions.
Axiom Space Chief Engineer Jim Stein personally demonstrated the suit during the presentation at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Compared to the bulky suits worn by Apollo crews in the 1960s and 1970s, the new suits are significantly more mobile, said Axiom Space’s Russell Ralston.
The new helmet offers better visibility, the boots are specially designed for lunar walks and the thermal insulation for the south pole of the moon, Axiom said when presenting the suit.
The suit, which launched on Wednesday, was black with orange and blue elements. However, for the moon landing mission “Artemis 3”, scheduled for the end of 2025, the astronauts will wear a white suit that best reflects the sun’s rays.
With the program “Artemis”, named after the Greek goddess of the moon, American astronauts should land on Earth’s satellite again in the coming years.
