The Basque government expects the Basque economy grows by 1.5% this year and 2.1% next year. In addition, it is expected that both years will yield 10,000 jobs and the unemployment rate falls to 8.2% in 2023 and 8.0% in 2024.
The regional executive, after receiving the latest data from the Eustat Basque Statistics Institute for March, has considered revising last October’s economic forecasts. This was explained by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Pedro Azpiazu, at a press conference, in which he was accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Economy and European Funds, Iñaki Barredo, and the Director of Economy and Planning, Alberto Ansuategi.
As he specified, the new forecasts are made from a perspective “conservative and careful”aware that the European Central Bank could continue to raise interest rates to record highs given continued core inflation, which would hamper growth, but also taking into account that this year the socio-economic fabric is starting to peak european funds. Their impact could even contribute to projected growth of between 1.6% and 2.3% of annual GDP over the period 2021-2026, not yet counting the knock-on effects they could have.
