“Bomb Threat!” That has been the warning call of the police stations in Carinthia almost every day since the beginning of March. Five times — so far — the executive has had to move to different schools across the state. Each time it was a false alarm. Whether the series is about youthful pranks and copycats is still uncertain. However, the warnings should always be taken seriously by the emergency services.
The series of bomb threats at the St. Veit an der Glan vocational school began last week. Explosives specialists and the Cobra task force had to leave. According to the National Police Directorate, the bomb threat was written on a piece of paper – the sender is not yet known. It soon became clear that the threat was a hoax.
Copycat criminals are not excluded by the police
But this bluff should not be the last. Because two days later the next alarm came: this time the BORG in the capital was hit. About 2000 children and young people were in the large area on Hubertusstrasse in Klagenfurt and had to be brought out. This time the warning was found on the wall of a toilet. But just like the first incident, this too was a scam.
A copycat cannot be ruled out by the police, but officials have not yet been able to confirm anything. “We take the situation very seriously,” said police spokesman Mario Nemetz. The incident must be taken seriously and the situation must be properly monitored, the emergency services said.
But even after the two events, the series in Carinthia does not stop. On Monday there was already another warning call from the Slovenian secondary school in Klagenfurt. About 500 students and teachers had to leave the building – here too the bomb threat was discovered on a wall.
Finally, it was the turn of the vocational school in Spittal on Wednesday. On Thursday there were two assignments – in the educational institution for primary education in Klagenfurt and in Villacher at the vocational school. As with the previous times, the building had to be evacuated and the emergency services had to be called to definitively determine that it was again a false alarm.
Threats are not an innocent joke
Police spokeswoman Waltraud Dullnig points out that such threats are not innocent jokes: “Such threats can have criminal consequences and the costs of policing can be recovered.” The costs must therefore be borne by those responsible.
