After discovering new corrosion problems, 320 welds of French nuclear power plants must be checked. These are pipelines that were repaired during the construction of the power plants, the Agency for Nuclear Safety (ASN) announced on Thursday.
The energy company EDF has announced that it will inspect more than 90 percent of the welds this year. The unexpected fatigue failures at the power plants required further analysis, ASN explains. Cracks in pipes have recently been discovered in three power plants, but have had no impact on personnel or the environment.
Corrosion problems had shut down a number of nuclear plants in France over the past year, some of them aging, and forced the country mired in the energy crisis to import more electricity, including from Germany. So far it has not been assumed that the recent problems will greatly limit the operation of the nuclear power plants.
Paris will be heavily dependent on nuclear energy in the future
France plans to remain heavily dependent on nuclear energy for its energy supply in the future. The construction of 14 new power plants in 2050 is being considered. At the same time, however, renewable energy sources, especially offshore wind farms, need to be expanded.
