Since Sunday evening, 640 migrants have arrived in Lampedusa aboard 17 boats. In total, the authorities on the southern Italian island reported 21 landings involving 819 people within 24 hours. After a four-day break due to poor sea conditions, landings picked up again on Sunday.
All migrants who arrived were housed in the island’s hot spot, which housed up to 1,094 people. However, there are only about 400 places available on Lampedusa.

The government in Rome has declared a state of emergency across the country due to the recent high number of migrations. This is valid for six months. Special funding will be provided for the southern regions particularly affected by the migration problem.
The state of emergency gives the government special powers. The scheme now allows new reception centers for illegal refugees to be established to speed up the identification and deportation of people. About 115,000 refugees are currently being hosted by Italy’s reception system. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni tirelessly calls for help from Brussels.
