The Minister of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment of the Basque Government, Arantxa Tapiahas recognized that the demographic challenge is one of the country’s greatest challenges, and that we must add to this the retirement of the so-called ‘baby boom’ generation in the coming years.
In an interview on Radio Euskadi’s ‘Boulevard’ programme, Tapia acknowledged that it will probably be necessary to ‘attract’ people from other places to maintain the current prosperity model.
According to the latest EITB data published this Monday, the number of retirees has increased by 20% over the past decade. Furthermore, more than a fifth of the adult population in the Basque Autonomous Community (CAV) is currently retired and there are fewer than two people in work for every retiree.
