The Eusko label identifies the mackerel caught by boats using traditional fishing gear from the Basque Country and of very good quality. In this way we want to make it easier for the consumer to distinguish quality mackerel from the Basque Country.
This Friday the mackerel coast in Euskadi with an important novelty as it will have the quality identification from now on Basque label.
Mackerel thus joins the family of products with the Eusko label and will have to comply with the provisions of a demanding technical regulation. In particular, mackerel caught by boats using traditional fishing gear will be identified with the Eusko label (hook and bless) from Euskadi and with a very good quality caught in the usual area of the Basque artisanal coastal fleet. When classifying the fish (Extra or A.) quality aspects such as appearance, skin or consistency are taken into account.
In this way we want to make it easier for the consumer to distinguish quality mackerel from the Basque Country.
The presentation of the mackerel with the Eusko label took place in Hondarribia and the Minister of Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment of the Basque Government, Arantxa Tapia, has emphasized that with the inclusion of the mackerel in the Eusko label, the fishing industry from Euskadi “a new tool to ensure your products reach the market with the highest possible value and with more opportunities and new commercial development tools”.
In addition to Tapia, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Policy of the Basque Government, Bittor Oroz, and representatives of the Basque fisheries sector attended the award ceremony.
In the first significant landing of mackerel, the arrantzales of Euskadi caught 2,080,696 kg and the average price per kilo was 1.31 Euro. As for the anchovies, 1,105,357 kilos were caught and the average price on this occasion was 1.68 euros per kilo.
