Mayor Harald Preuner (ÖVP) had fought hard for it. Now, according to information from “Krone”, a decision has been made. No more refugees will move into the former luxury hotel Kobenzl am Gaisberg.
As a reminder, the Ministry of the Interior rented the building as a refugee shelter in 2015, but it has been empty for more than four years now. Nevertheless, the Ministry of the Interior transfers almost 30,000 euros to the owners every month. That is already the reduced lease after a shortening of the contract period. The lease expires at the end of 2024.
Reduction of the leasehold prevents use
This is also the reason why no more refugees move in. Because the use of the house would oblige the Ministry of the Interior to take extensive dust-improving measures. In plain language: The Kobenzl needs to be renovated at least partially. That quickly costs millions. Preuner also understands that this will not pay off in the relatively short term.
In terms of asylum stays in the communities – reported the “Krone” – the Kobenzl would have made no difference anyway. Because it’s a federal care ward. The federal states must look for shelter on their own responsibility, the Kobenzl would not have been counted for the Salzburg quota.
