In a forest near the Völkermarkt in Carinthia, where the badly battered corpse of a woman was found, a terrible picture presented itself to investigators: the murder victim had not only been strangled and shot, the perpetrator had also tried to set the corpse on fire. Prosecutors have now charged the woman’s former lover nearly 15 years later.
The murder of the Italian Anna T. in Völkermarkt was a cold case for almost 15 years. Several TV programs about the brutal crime in Carinthia had failed to yield a reliable clue about a perpetrator. Then the traces suddenly got hot last year: because in a prison in Turin there was an inmate for money laundering and receiving stolen goods whose DNA matched traces on Anna’s corpse! Brahim H., 48, was extradited from Italy and now has to go to court in Klagenfurt after extensive investigation.
Perpetrator wanted to burn all traces
“We have filed a murder charge against him,” confirms Markus Kitz of the Klagenfurt public prosecutor’s office. “The suspect has not yet confessed, but based on several indications, we assume that he killed the victim in a so-called relationship overkill.” The 49-year-old suffocated and died after multiple shots to the upper body and head before her corpse must also be burned. Only the onset of rain prevented Anna’s body from burning beyond recognition. After a careful reconstruction, she could be identified.
Sister recognized him
After all this time, how did investigators come up with their alleged killer? The DNA hit weighs the heaviest. Semen was found on the body, which the experts believe came from Brahim A. In addition, the sister of the murdered man accuses the man: she was able to recognize him in a comparison in Klagenfurt. It would be Anna’s former lover, who had left for Carinthia with the later victim in a VW Polo at the time of the crime. Vehicle traces at the crime scene in the woods near Völkermarkt match a car found in Turin – the couple’s hometown. Incidentally, jealousy is suspected as a motive: the man would have been looking for a relationship, Anna for an affair. The indictment is not yet final, judge Sabine Götz will lead the trial.
