powerless authorities? – 35 Tyrolean children disappeared from the school system

Date:

The Tyrolean authorities are currently combating a worrying phenomenon that can also be observed in other federal states. Parents pick up their children from school and then break off contact. The path leads deep into the milieu of the so-called state objectors.

What if parents deregister their children from school and they are simply no longer available and none of the prescribed exams are taken? The Tyrolean authorities are dealing with this delicate matter. 35 Tyrolean children have practically disappeared from the school system. No one knows about their training.

Trend from the Corona period is bearing dangerous fruit
What is it about: Homeschooling experienced a boom during the Corona period. In the whole of Austria 7,500 children received private education, in Tyrol 450. The right to this is guaranteed by the constitution. The trend has since leveled off somewhat. As reported, 330 Tyrolean children were taken out of school last year. According to the Education Directorate, 70 returned during the school year because private lessons are not so easy to organize.

Children were not taken to the required exams
Everyone who teaches their child at home had to take a test at the end of the year. This determines whether everything fits. This year there is also a new edition: a reflection meeting at the beginning of the second semester. But none of these appointments saw the 35 children whose parents are currently employed by the state apparatus. The education department, district administration, youth care and the ministry have already been alerted.

“We are very concerned. The parents refuse the state system and we don’t really know if the children are getting a good education,” explains Tyrol education director Paul Gappmaier, “it is possible that some of them have already lost two or three years.”

Advertisements and punishments hardly make an impression
The authorities have influence, but the hard core does not give in. Gappmaier confirms that illegal private schools have been reported in the Kufstein area and in the Ötztal. The bras are active. Some parents have also received dozens of reports of compulsory education violations. Sanctions: up to €440 each. Youth care is also involved. “Because the well-being of the child is endangered,” explains the director of education.

Nothing has helped so far. Many of the affected parents are so-called state refusers. They do not respond to punishments, orders, decisions. Others have appealed to the Supreme Court. “But all complaints were rejected,” says Gappmaier.

What no one knows: how far are the parents willing to go to oppose the state. Gappmaier hopes he will admit: “It is not our goal to punish parents, but to ensure children’s educational opportunities.”
