Two Turkish fighter jets entered Greek airspace on Friday. They have approached the port city of Alexandroupolis, where the US military has a base. Why the jets chose this target is not yet clear.
Until now, overflights by Turkish fighter jets have been seen as a way to question the sovereignty of the Greek islands. It is now suspected that the Turkish government’s veto over Sweden and Finland’s accession to NATO could be another reason. According to the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it poses a threat to the EU because the port of Alexandroupoli is an important transport hub for the Allies. The government in Athens has already protested to the Turkish ambassador and informed the EU, NATO and the United Nations.
In particular, two planes approached within 2.5 kilometers of Alexandroupoli on Friday. It happens almost every day that Turkish bombers violate Greek airspace and fly over populated areas. What is new, however, is that they targeted the US military base. Through this war material is transported to the Ukrainian border within a few hours.
Turkish government is against cooperation
US-Greece cooperation is a thorn in the side of the Turkish government, especially as the US bypasses the sea route through the Strait of Dardanelles and the Bosphorus in Turkey.
