Five acquaintances went on a ski tour together on Saturday in the Leoganger Steinberge in Salzburg. The group was on the Grießener Hochbrett. 200 meters below the summit, an avalanche suddenly broke out around noon.
The slab of snow swept away the ski tourers with full force. Fortunately, the winter sports enthusiasts were able to free themselves from the avalanche in time. Four people were injured. The rescue helicopter flew them all to the hospital in Zell am See.
There is currently only a low avalanche risk on the Salzburg mountains. But: In the Hohe Tauern area, the avalanche warning service even poses a considerable risk. “The soft and increasingly decaying snow cover is a clear indication of the increasing danger,” it says.
