A Russian court on Monday froze all assets of car manufacturer Volkswagen in Russia. Car manufacturer GAZ had previously sued VW after the German group ended the cooperation in August 2022.
Until then, GAZ had produced vehicles for VW at its plant in Nizhny Novgorod. According to the Russian automaker, the damage amounts to almost 16 billion rubles (converted to 196 million euros). After the outbreak of war in Ukraine, Volkswagen ceased operations in Russia.
Factory in Kaluga is sold
On Monday, a Russian court ruled that all of the automaker’s assets would be frozen. The company is currently trying to sell its plant in Kaluga, south of Moscow. The factory, which has been shut down since March, can produce 225,000 vehicles per year. Kaluga is VW’s only Russian factory. Just over 4000 people worked there and made the Škoda Rapid, but also engines.
In addition to Europe, the German group also produces in Central and South America, China and South Africa. In these countries, the models are significantly cheaper and better suited for use on bad roads.
