No crime without punishment – that is still true almost two decades after the bank robbery in Gries im Sellrain in Tyrol. Detectives have now arrested a 38-year-old Moldovan. First perpetrator caught after act.
Almost 19 years ago, two criminals masked with motorcycle helmets broke into a bank branch in Gries. The unknown men threatened the clerk with a gun and forced her to give cash. At the time, they captured no less than 18,000 euros and then took off with a scooter stolen earlier in Innsbruck.
During a house search, one of the suspected perpetrators was tracked down and arrested by EKO Cobra in Sellrain. Two other helpers of the robbers were also found and arrested. Two years ago, an accomplice from Moldova who was wanted under an EU arrest warrant was arrested in Ukraine. He probably spied on the bank beforehand and acted as a watchdog. He was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison.
The second then managed to escape. So far: The man, who was also wanted by a European arrest warrant, has now been arrested in Romania and extradited to Austria. He is in Innsbruck prison. The now 38-year-old Moldavian was interrogated and confessed.
