The Halloween chaos in Linz is continuously judged. On Tuesday it was a 15-year-old’s turn and he was quite self-critical at the regional court. He was the first native Austrian to stand trial for the riots – and he accepted the verdict.
The teen has been given a four-month suspended prison sentence and probation for his “knowing participation” and for remaining “unnecessary”. Unlike other defendants convicted before him, the 15-year-old didn’t even try to make excuses, was genuinely sorry and confessed in full.
When asked why he got involved in the first place, he said, “Because I was stupid.” He was a classical follower, did not call for riots and did not shoot firecrackers and stones at police officers.
But he didn’t leave as the situation spiraled out of control, which is why: “Caught, stay with me” – and as a follower you risk a year in prison.
