There is currently a life-size car tampon with red spots in front of the Graz Kunsthaus. It is part of a project by the artist Anna Spanlang called “Baby better have my period. I am not a museum”. Already on the first night, the tampon apparently provoked vandals who damaged it.
Anna Spanlang is currently responsible for the trailer for the Diagonale film festival. As part of this, she also exhibited an intervention on the forecourt of the Kunsthaus: a car, covered with white fabric and red blood stains, resembling a tampon. Spanlang developed the project together with G-Udit/Judith Kratz.
persistent taboo
With this, the artists refer to the persistent taboo on menstruation. Just one example: A few weeks ago, an ORF moderator made headlines for translating Mikaela Shiffrin’s “monthly cycle” as “monthly cycle.”
provocation in public space
Apparently, the tampon set up on Monday evening quickly caused a provocation: according to the Universalmuseum Joanneum, it had already been damaged by vandals before it opened on Tuesday.
The ÖVP councilor for culture, Günter Riegler, praised the artist’s work: “Contemporary art challenges us to think about social issues beyond the aesthetic aspect. Anna Spanlang’s work will undoubtedly become controversial viewed and discussed – a point of view that I hope will find many interested visitors.”
The statue is on display until April 30.
