Chinese President Xi Jinping has ended his state visit to Russia. He had arrived in Moscow on Monday. Xi and his host, Russian President Vladimir Putin, agreed that China and Russia should move closer together politically and economically.
In the West, explanations about the war in Ukraine were particularly eagerly awaited. The Chinese president stressed that Beijing was taking an “impartial position”. According to the Chinese agency Xinhua, Putin is ready for peace talks. The Russian president accused the West of wanting to fight “to the last Ukrainian”. China’s 12-point plan could form the basis for a peaceful solution if the West and Ukraine are willing. But this is not the case. The Asian country has never condemned its ally Russia for invading Ukraine.
No contact with Ukraine planned
Russian presidential adviser Yuri Ushakov said he does not expect Xi to call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy anytime soon. For days, the media speculated about such a conversation between Xi and the country’s head of state, against whom Russia has been waging an offensive war for more than a year.
Strong partners – despite the arrest warrant against Putin
Xi arrived in Moscow on Monday for the three-day visit. He spoke to Putin in pairs and in a larger group in the presence of a Russian and a Chinese delegation. Festive dinners were held twice. The visit from Beijing also suited Putin well, as it allowed him to show that he is not isolated internationally – despite the arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
