Unknown object – Nord Stream: cooperation with Russia after all?

Date:

May Russia now also participate in the investigation of the explosions on the Nord Stream gas pipelines. An unknown object was recently discovered near the damaged pipes. The Danish authorities now want to retrieve them with the help of the Russians.

The energy authority in Copenhagen announced on Thursday evening that the approximately 40 centimeter high and cylindrical object on the bottom of the Baltic Sea had already been investigated. There is no direct security risk. It may be a smoke buoy.

Russia invited to rescue
To finally clarify this, the object must now be restored. In this context, Nord Stream 2 AG was offered to participate in the salvage operation, the statement from the Danish energy authority said. That was welcomed in Moscow. “It is positive news if the owner of the pipeline is invited to important investigative acts,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday, according to the Interfax agency.

It should be investigated whether the object found has anything to do with the “act of terrorism” on the Nord Stream lines, he said. And – contrary to Danish information – he added: “And apparently it is.”

Moscow sees ‘Anglo-Saxon’ sabotage
At the end of September 2022, a total of four leaks were discovered in the two gas pipelines Nord Stream 1 and 2 as a result of explosions near the Danish Baltic Sea island of Bornholm. Authorities suspect sabotage. It is unclear who is responsible for this. Germany, Sweden and Denmark have launched investigations. German government politicians recently warned against jumping to conclusions and warned to wait for the end of the investigations. Moscow, on the other hand, soon after the attack blamed the “Anglo-Saxons”, that is, the British and the Americans.

Recently, reports of US intelligence agencies’ findings have caused a stir. These point to a pro-Ukrainian group that allegedly committed the sabotage with a rented ship. While there are no clear conclusions based on available intelligence, it is possible that the operation was carried out unofficially by a plenipotentiary army associated with the Ukrainian government or its security services, the New York Times reported in early March.
