Is it one of countless announcements not followed by action – or is there more to it this time? At a meeting of the heads of the transport departments from Bavaria, Tyrol and South Tyrol in Bozen, a slot system – ie a bookable highway for transit trucks – was discussed.
They wanted to work on cross-border, digital traffic management, it said on Friday afternoon. “For Bavaria, this would mean the end of traffic jams when handling blocks,” said Bavarian Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter (CSU). He was pleased that for the first time the members of the government of all three regions were working together on the subject.
Zumtobel hopes for a double effect
Tyrol Transport councilor René Zumtobel (SPÖ) praised the “constructive” cooperation. “With digital traffic management for transit trucks, the Brenner corridor could become a model region from which both the taxed population and the transport sector will benefit equally,” he said.
County councilor Daniel Alfreider (SVP) of the South Tyrol Mobility County agreed: “What is particularly important for joint traffic management is the exchange of traffic data to create more predictability – the three countries want to work on this together”.
Working group presented ideas
A working group now presented its results to those responsible for politics. It was agreed to prepare a joint statement, which was then submitted to the provincial governors Tyrol and South Tyrol must be presented. Ultimately, however, an agreement at national level is needed. There, the mood between the Italian and German transport ministers Matteo Salvini (Lega) and Volker Wissing (FDP) on the one hand and the Austrian transport minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) on the other hand was not particularly good.
