Trauma surgeons warn – “Triage has long been part of everyday life almost everywhere”

Date:

Dr Vincent Smekal and Dr Kambiz Sarahrudi represent 1800 trauma surgeons in Austria. While others can only talk anonymously about the problems in the emergency room, the two top doctors find clear words. And what they report should make every politician think.

“crown”: As the “Austrian Society for Trauma Surgery” (ÖGU), you recently warned that care for the seriously injured in Austria was on the verge of collapse. Another colleague said that it is better not to get into accidents in Vienna. Vienna city councilor for health Peter Hacker says: “It’s only a crisis when we close”. So what now?
dr Vinzenz Smekal: I think we are in a major crisis. And we don’t see any signs of improvement either. Moreover, there are several crises at the same time. We are short of nurses and doctors. It started with planned operations being postponed due to lack of personnel or space due to closed wards. We are currently at the point where some hospitals no longer accept acute patients. But they are not missing because the house is full, but because there is simply no one to take care of these things.
Dr Kambiz Sarahrudi: You can call it whatever you want. The fact is that we are dealing with a reduction in the quality of care. Necessary operations are already being postponed. This actually causes damage to people’s health. Now everyone has to imagine for themselves whether this is a crisis.
