The strong migration movement towards Italy continues. On Monday night, 650 migrants landed at the port of Roccella Jonica in the Calabria region. Most migrants come from Egypt, including a number of minors. They reached the coast aboard a large fishing boat, which was sailing again, Italian media reported.
On February 26, a fishing trawler crashed into the rocks in Calabria. At least 91 people died and 10 others are still missing. 80 people were able to save themselves. The victims are mainly people from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran.
mayor warns
The mayor of the southern Italian island of Lampedusa, Filippo Minnino, called for a joint European mission in the Mediterranean. “Europe and Italy must realize that there is a state of emergency in the Mediterranean. Women, children and men continue to die,” the politician said.
Meanwhile, the rescue ship Louise Michel, financed by British artist Banksy, was arrested in Lampedusa on Sunday. The ship is said to have violated new rules for NGO vessels conducting search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean.
According to the Tunisian coastguard, two boats with 74 people on board were prevented from making the crossing to Italy on Sunday. 23 migrants from various African countries who illegally entered Tunisia via the Algerian border have been arrested, the Tunisian coastguard reports on its Facebook page.
