In the Albanian capital Tirana, several armed perpetrators attacked the headquarters of the TV channel Top Channel on Monday evening. A security guard (60) was so badly injured that he died on the way to the hospital. Austrian Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen is currently in Tirana.
According to the reports, the attackers drove an SUV and fired semi-automatic firearms at the entrance of the building. The guard was shot in his porter’s lodge. The motive for the act of violence was initially unclear. Authorities found the burnt-out wreckage of the murder vehicle that same night.
Top Channel is considered the leading television channel in Albanian. His programs are broadcast not only in Albania, but also in neighboring Kosovo, where ethnic Albanians also live.
Van der Bellen and Zadic with a large delegation in Albania
Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen has been in Tirana since Sunday, together with Minister of Justice Alma Zadic (Greens) and a large business delegation of about 30 people. Van der Bellen will hold political talks in the Albanian capital on Monday, including with Prime Minister Edi Rama and Speaker of Parliament Lindita Nikolla. In addition, the Federal President will give a speech in parliament and open an economic forum with his colleague Begaj.
Van der Bellen will travel to neighboring North Macedonia on Tuesday. In the two EU candidate countries, the Federal President wants to be a “door opener” for local entrepreneurs.
