At least six dead – US gunman rampaged at her old school

Date:

The alleged perpetrator (28) of the frenzy in Nashville would have attended a Christian primary school himself. This is reported by the American television channel CNN, which referred to the police. At least six people were killed in the disaster Monday morning (local time), including three children.

According to the initial findings, the alleged perpetrator was 28 years old and lived in Nashville (US state of Tennessee). At a press conference on Monday, local police chief John Drake said the young woman went to the Christian primary school herself. However, it is still unclear what year that was. A nearby car is said to have given clues to the alleged shooter, but the investigation has not yet been completed.

School staff and children killed
As reported, the woman was shot dead by US police. She allegedly killed six people, including three children and three staff members, in the shooting at a Nashville Christian elementary school. Dozens more people were injured. “We know she was armed with at least two assault rifles and one handgun,” Officer Don Aaron said at a news conference. Police received a report at the school around 10 a.m. local time. “When the officers arrived on the second floor, they saw a gunman, a woman who was shooting.” According to initial findings, she gained access to the school through a side entrance.

It is not yet clear how many people were there at the time of the crime. According to local newspaper The Tennessean, the private Christian school is attended by about 200 children, who are taught from first through sixth grade. There is also a kindergarten. About 70,000 people live in Nashville itself.

Biden calls for a ban on assault rifles
In an initial response, US President Joe Biden called again for a ban on assault rifles. Stricter gun laws are needed. “We must do more to stop gun violence.” The gunshots in Nashville are not only heartbreaking, but also a family’s “worst nightmare”. His wife Jill Biden, who is a teacher herself, also made herself heard. “Our children deserve better. We join Nashville in prayer,” she said in Washington.

Rampages and shootings are the order of the day in the United States. According to the latest data from the CDC, about 20,000 people were shot dead in the United States in 2020, that’s more than 50 a day. Firearm injuries were the number one cause of death among children and youth for the first time in 2020, ahead of traffic accidents. This year alone, Monday’s rampage marks the 129th mass shooting. However, female perpetrators are rare, men usually open fire.
