Ni-Una-Menos-Platz – memorial against femicide erected in Vienna

Date:

Vienna gets a central monument against femicide, namely Ni-Una-Menos-Platz on Alsergrund. The place is right in front of every tobacco shop where on March 5, 2021 a woman was murdered in a particularly gruesome way by her ex-partner.

This has been decided by the culture committee of the city council after a petition from the feminist movement Ni-Una-Menos Austria and at the request of the Greens, the Viennese Greens announced in a press release on Wednesday. The location was deliberately chosen to draw attention to the increasingly common murders of women in Austria.

The memorial should call for a united fight against femicide and violence against women, said Josefa Molitor-Ruckenbauer, Deputy Green District Manager Alsergrund.

Smothered with a cable
In the case of the murder of women in the tobacco shop in Vienna, the perpetrator has now been sentenced to life imprisonment and committed to an institution for mentally disturbed offenders. The perpetrator had knocked the woman down in her tobacconist’s shop, choked her with a cable, poured petrol over her and set her on fire. The 35-year-old died of her burns after weeks of intensive medical treatment.

The now international movement is not only directed against femicide, but also against a patriarchal system in which women are oppressed by violence. The Latin American movement “Ni Una Menos” (in English: “Not one more”) was founded in 2015 in response to brutal femicide and increasing sexual violence in Argentina.

In Austria, 59 women have been murdered in the past two years
In an EU comparison, women in Austria are particularly at risk of being killed by ex-partners and male acquaintances or relatives, as Vienna Greens spokeswoman Viktoria Spielmann noted: “In 2021 and 2022 alone, 59 women were killed. There were a disproportionately high number of cases in Vienna, making Ni Una Menos Square an important symbol against any form of violence against women and girls in public spaces.”
