8.8 tons of cocaine found in banana container in Ecuador

Date:

In Ecuador, the police seized about 8.8 tons of cocaine worth 330 million dollars (about 313 million euros). The drugs were hidden between bananas in a container destined for Belgium.

“Record seizures in 2023 of more than eight tons of cocaine,” Police Representative Fausto Salinas wrote on Twitter on Sunday. “We prevented 90 million cans worth $330 million from being sold in Europe,” he said. He also released a video showing police searching the container at the port of Guayaquil, the country’s second largest city.

Sitting between Colombia and Peru, the main producers of cocaine, Ecuador seized about 210 tons of the drug in 2021 for shipment to Europe – a record.

Last year, more than 200 tons were seized, 61 percent of which was hidden in bananas intended for export. So far this year, Ecuadorian authorities have seized a total of 31 tons of cocaine.

Belgium is one of the most important drug trafficking centers in Europe. More cocaine was seized in the port of Antwerp alone last year than anywhere else in Europe.
