The Ukrainian government has canceled the lease with the monks in the famous Pechersk Lavra in Kiev. They were pro-Russian, he said. An eviction is not imminent, the process can take several weeks.
The contract, which allowed the monks free use of part of the Lavra Pechersk Monastery, was terminated on March 29, said Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of the Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. Everything else will be “in accordance with the law”.
The stricken monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was until recently the seat of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. This depended on the Moscow Patriarchate for a long time until it officially seceded in May 2022. However, Ukrainian authorities accuse it of remaining pro-Russian. The famous monastery and cathedral have been under the independent Orthodox Church since December.
Monks: “Law on our side”
For their part, the monks announced that they would stay as long as possible. The law is on their side, Metropolitan Pavlo said at a morning mass attended by hundreds of worshipers. The Ukrainian government has no right to expel clergy without a court decision.
