A terrible incident took place in the Jakomini prison in Graz: two cell mates of the same age assaulted a 17-year-old for days and seriously injured him. The police are investigating.
Exactly 116 young people are currently being held in Austrian prisons. Eight of them are in Styrian prisons. As in normal adult prisons, there are always violent scenes among the young inmates.
Body covered with welts
That also happened at the end of December last year in the Graz-Jakomini prison. As has only now become known, two prisoners – a Romanian and an Austrian, both 17 years old – repeatedly assaulted their cellmates of the same age for days. The procedure is shocking, justice insiders speak of torture: they would have whipped the boy with a headphone cable, his body was covered in welts and bruises.
They also beat him so hard that his face and one eye were seriously injured. As if that wasn’t enough, they shaved off his hair and eyebrows.
Transferred to other prisons
After the incident, the suspects were immediately transferred to other institutions and the prosecutor’s office in Graz ordered the police to investigate, their spokesman Hansjörg Bacher confirmed when asked by “Krone”. The suspicion is grievous bodily harm, coercion and dangerous threats. A final report should be ready soon.
