Austria supports judiciary reforms as the Western Balkan countries move closer to the EU.
“Reforms of the rule of law and the fight against corruption are indispensable conditions on the way to the EU. And they are also an essential basis for stability and prosperity,” said Justice Minister Alma Zadić, who accompanied Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen on his trip to the Western Balkans in recent days.
Suitcase with millions of bribes
That is why Austria is striving for more judicial cooperation with all countries of the Western Balkans. Corresponding declarations have already been signed in Albania and North Macedonia. In particular, the fight against corruption must be a top priority, as two examples show: For example, in North Macedonia, the head of the anti-corruption prosecutor’s office was recently caught with a briefcase containing €1 million in bribes.
Wave of layoffs over ownership issue
And in Albania, 60 percent (!) of judges and prosecutors resigned when the Ministry of Justice asked them to disclose their financial situation.
