The Kremlin has now declared the West an “existential” threat. Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that the current “upheavals in the international arena” have necessitated a new foreign policy strategy.
“The Russian Federation intends to give priority to eliminating (…) the dominance of the United States and other unfriendly countries in world politics,” the 42-page document reads. China and India, on the other hand, are described as important allies of Russia on the world stage. The strategy therefore emphasizes the importance of “deeper relations and coordination with friendly sovereign global centers of power and development on the Eurasian continent”. The doctrine also provides for the expansion of relations with Africa and Latin America.
20 states classified as “unfriendly”.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke of Moscow’s response to the “existential nature of the threats to our country’s security and development from the actions of unfriendly states” regarding the new strategy. Moscow has classified about 20 states as “unfriendly”. These include the US, Germany, Great Britain and Poland. All of them have imposed massive sanctions on Moscow over Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
Lavrov specifically accused the US of being the driving force behind “anti-Russian reservations” around the world. Washington and its allies waged a “hybrid war” against Moscow.
