Hundreds of followers of a Christian sect have migrated from Uganda to Ethiopia after a cult leader predicted a mass death. As Ugandan police told dpa on Friday, the walk had already begun in February. The approximately 200 people have now settled in the south of Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously confirmed that hundreds of Ugandans had entered Ethiopia overland.
“The sect’s followers feared an impending apocalypse, in which there would be displacement and deaths,” said Ethiopian foreign ministry spokesman Meles Alem.
Journey to the Mother Church
According to Ugandan police, the cult members had migrated to Ethiopia to attend their mother church. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is considered one of the oldest churches in the world.
Many people in East African Uganda are deeply religious. 23 years ago, leaders of the ominous Catholic sect “Movement for the Restoration of God’s Ten Commandments” committed a mass murder in Uganda that killed more than 700 people. The cult’s leaders needed an explanation after the end of the world was not announced.
