Scammers on the road: – Expired Romanian lei exchanged for euros

Date:

Two fraudsters were up to mischief in Carinthia on April 1. By asking to exchange the Romanian lei (currency in Romania) for euros, they swindled hundreds of euros from two Carinthians.

The two unknown perpetrators, traveling in a blue station wagon, apprehended their first victim around 5:45 p.m. on Rosentalstraße (B 85) in Ferlach, Klagenfurt district. They pretended to a 58-year-old man from the Klagenfurt district that he had no money for petrol to drive to Berlin. They asked the man to exchange 1500 Romanian lei for 250 euros (current exchange rate 1500 lei = about 300 euros).

“The man took the two suspects to the ATM, got the money there and exchanged the euro banknotes for 1,500 lei,” the police said. It wasn’t until he got home that the man discovered that the replacement Romanian lei was no longer valid for ten years. “Especially these banknotes had expired,” said the police.

Thrown again
And just a few hours later, around 7 p.m., the perpetrators struck again. In the main street of the town of Grafenstein, in the Klagenfurt district, they used the same trick to extort 100 euros from a 27-year-old man from the Ukraine. “The unknown perpetrator again stated to the man that his debit card would not work and that he needed the euros for petrol to drive to Berlin,” the police emphasized. The Ukrainian exchanged 100 euros for 500 Romanian lei.

The victim described the vehicle as a dark blue station wagon with German license plates. A search for the two suspects has so far been unsuccessful. The police ask for information.
