The trial of a husband who offered his drugged wife to strangers for rape for years is horrifying in France. The couple’s daughter has now told the court how she learned about the horrific allegations – and found clear words.
Carolin D., 45, said he was “one of the worst sex offenders of the last twenty years.” “How do you rebuild yourself when you are aware of this?” she asked in the sensational Avignon rape trial.
She is said to have learned about her father’s cruelty from her mother. The 72-year-old said one day: “I was at the police station today. Your father knocked me out so he could rape me with strangers.” A world collapsed.
Father also abused daughter
“I called my brothers, we were shocked, we were crying,” she explained through tears. The pain she felt at that moment was something she would not wish on anyone. The siblings were also questioned by the police. The officers showed the daughter naked photos of her. “That’s how I found out that my father had photographed me naked without my knowledge. ‘Why?’ she asked.
The case came to light after the 71-year-old man was targeted by law enforcement for filming women up to their skirts in a shopping mall. During house searches, investigators found numerous photos and videos showing the abuse of his apparently unconscious wife by other men.
Images of 200 rapes
Mother Gisèle P. described in detail in court on Thursday how she suffered from unexplained memory problems and gynaecological problems for years before she discovered what her husband was doing to her.
The researchers identified a total of 200 rapes committed by the woman between 2011 and 2020. Most were committed by her husband, and in 92 cases by other men. Using phone bills and facial recognition using artificial intelligence, the researchers discovered a total of 74 men who had abused the woman.
Suspects between 26 and 74 years old
Now, in addition to the main defendant, 50 other men are to stand trial and risk prison sentences of up to 20 years. They are aged between 26 and 74 and, according to psychological experts, were living fantasies of omnipotence when they raped the unconscious woman.
The man had openly offered to rape his wife on internet forums. “You are just like me, you like rape mode,” he wrote to one of the interested men. He explained to others that in this way he could perform sexual practices that his wife would otherwise deny him.
The trial is expected to last until December
The trial against him and 50 co-defendants began Monday in Avignon and is expected to last until December 20. Two sons and the couple’s daughter, who have been in the divorce process since the incidents became known, are also appearing as co-plaintiffs. The daughter had left the courtroom the day before in tears when the presiding judge described that the defendant had also kept nude photos of his own daughter.
The suspects must answer for, among other things, sexual abuse of people who cannot resist. The trial revives the debate in France about how to deal with alleged rapes after the administration of so-called knockout drops – which are often difficult to prove.
