Euskadi reduces his emissions by 33 % and creates 2,000 annual jobs with its energy transition plan

Date:

The Basque government exceeds the objectives of reducing greenhouse gases and mobilizes more than 400 million in sustainable investments between 2021 and 2024.

The final report of the energy and climate transition plan of the Basque Government (PTECC), corresponding to the period 2021-2024, shows that a reduction of 33 % has been achieved in greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) compared to 2005, that the goal of 30 % is initially higher than 30 % planned. In addition, the plan has yielded an economic impact with a total investment of 413.9 million euros and an annual average of 2,013 created jobs.

The document indicates that the degree of implementation of the planned 88 planned actions, grouped in 15 initiatives, has been 75 %. Among them that related to photovoltaic solar energy has reached 100 % version, while others, such as the hydrogen ecosystem and the energy transition in public administration, have a more limited development, with 43 % and 50 % respectively.

With regard to renewable energy, the plan has promoted the establishment of 12 energy communities via the Ekiola initiative and has promoted more than 4,700 new facilities, both of electric and thermal production. However, the quota for renewable energy is 17.1 %, under the goal of 20 %.

The Mopes III program has been one of the highlights in sustainable mobility that encourage the acquisition of electric vehicles and the installation of charging points. More than 600 actions in buildings have also been carried out to improve energy efficiency, with an estimated saving of 5,778 MWh.

In the field of adaptation to climate change, Euskadi has been recognized by the European Commission as an advanced region in the implementation of nature -based solutions. Projects are carried out in environments such as Tonpoi (Bermeo), the Estepona River (Bakio) and Punta Zorroza, as well as performance to evaluate and manage coast risks.

This report marks the closure of the PTECC cycle and the start of a new phase, defined by the Basque law of energy transition and climate change approved in February 2024, which determines the elaboration of a long -term route map and an energy transition strategy and climate change.
