NY in a state of emergency – Tension abounds for the reading of the indictment against Donald Trump

Date:

The United States eagerly awaits the reading of the indictment against former US President Donald Trump over a hush money scandal. Trump will appear at the Manhattan attorney’s office on Tuesday before being read in court. The authorities have taken enormous security measures.

Trump was indicted by a grand jury on Thursday for paying $130,000 in hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels. The 76-year-old Republican is the first former US president ever to be impeached and face criminal charges.

“Not guilty” – and back to Florida
Trump is scheduled to appear before the Manhattan Attorney’s Office on Tuesday and will be processed for identification, including fingerprints and mugshots. Then the indictment, hitherto kept secret, will be read to him. Trump will plead not guilty, his lawyer said.

The hearing date was scheduled for 2:15 pm (local time – 8:15 pm CEST). Trump then wants to travel back to his private residence Mar-a-Lago in the US state of Florida and make a statement there in the evening.

Busy about arrival
Trump’s trip from Florida to New York drew huge media attention on Monday. The ex-president was first driven from Mar-a-Lago in West Palm Beach to nearby Palm Beach International Airport. He then flew aboard his private jet to New York’s LaGuardia Airport, from where he was driven to his Trump Tower skyscraper in Manhattan, where he has an apartment. News channels broadcast live images of the various stages of the journey.

New York is prepared
The security authorities took numerous precautions for the charges on Tuesday. New York Mayor Eric Adams announces decisive action against potential violent protests. “As always, we will not allow any form of violence or vandalism,” Adams said at city hall in the American megacity. “If anyone commits an act of violence, no matter who it is, they will be arrested.”

At the same time, Adams said “agitators” could travel to New York. “Our message is clear and simple: control yourself.” The Democratic Party politician named right-wing Republican MP Marjorie Taylor Greene as planning to join protests in New York on Tuesday. The MP is known for spreading “misinformation and hate speech,” Adams said. At the same time, the mayor stressed that there are currently “no specific, credible threats to our city”.

Trump had called on his supporters to protest in mid-March ahead of an alleged imminent arrest. The right-wing populist later said that an indictment against him could lead to “death and destruction” – to critics an open call to violence that brought back memories of the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
