Border officials in Brisbane have seized 336 kilograms of heroin from Malaysia. That’s a third of the amount consumed annually across Australia, police said on Tuesday. The drugs were hidden in a sea freight container.
Officers discovered the heroin in two heavy blocks of concrete labeled as solar energy accessories. The heroin was divided into 960 packages of 350 grams each. The shipment was addressed to an industrial estate in Brendale, north of Brisbane. The street value of the drugs is AUD 268.8 million.
Police say this is the largest ever heroin find in Queensland and the second largest in the country. “This amount of heroin would have caused untold damage to the community and strained our healthcare and social services – all in the name of greed,” police spokesman John Tanti said. The confiscation is a huge financial blow to the smugglers.
The suspect faces life imprisonment
A Sydney man has already been arrested in connection with heroin from Malaysia. The 55-year-old faces a life sentence.
