1970s Interview – Thomas Spitzer: “Not Everything Was Flattering”

Date:

EAV founder, word acrobat, illustrator, caricaturist, politically alert mind – the Styrian Thomas Spitzer has shaped the local cultural landscape like no other. On April 6, he celebrates his 70th birthday and his wife Nora gives him a book about his own long-forgotten love letters and thoughts. We had a chat with Spitzer about past missteps, present calmness, and anticipation of the afterlife.

“crown”: Thomas, happy birthday! For your 70th birthday, your wife Nora is publishing the book “Herz auf Reisen” in which we can follow drawings, travelogues, notes and thoughts of you between 2005 and 2022…
Thomas Spizer:
Without them, these documents would probably have rotted away somewhere. She wanted to take a look, but that took half a year. (laughs) Nora found the love letters I had pushed to the background and my mourning from back then and said she would make them available to the public so people could get to know the prankster of the nation from a different angle. Precisely because the letters are emotional and private. My wife was a fan of Gert Steinbäcker when she was young and realized that I could not only write silly EAV songs, but songs that were specific to my feelings. In any case, without my wife, this book would not have been possible.
