In Italy, English terms will soon be on the neck – fines of up to 100,000 euros!
This bill has it all! The document from the Fratelli d’Italia party, which also includes Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, focuses mainly on anglicisms, or English words in the language. In concrete terms, member of parliament Fabio Rampelli wants all English words to disappear from everyday use.
“Humiliate and humiliate Italian language”
After all, such terms “demean and humiliate” the Italian language. Further justification for the planned innovation: “It is not just a fad, the use of anglicisms has an impact on society as a whole.” The draft law therefore requires that anyone holding office in public administration “speaks, written and spoken, the Italian language”.
Basic vocabulary for Italian cooking
To ensure that everything runs smoothly, at least on your next holiday with our southern neighbours, we have listed a few culinary delights for you, including the right and wrong pronunciation.
And also for foreign companies the motto is: Watch out! They should draft all internal regulations and employment contracts in Italian. Under the proposed law, the Ministry of Culture in Italy’s capital Rome will set up a special commission to deal with the “proper use of the Italian language and its pronunciation” in schools, the media, commerce and advertising. Failure to comply can result in a fine of up to 100,000 euros. What do the Italians say about this? “Oh Dio!”
