Letters to pastors – death threats after pole dance show in church

Date:

A French priest has received death threats after a sold-out pole dance show at his church. One of the letters demands that the pastor be beheaded “for handing over the keys of our holy church to a dancing serpent”.

Another letter states that the parishioners will also be beheaded. “This is not a church, it’s a cabaret,” it continues. There is “no doubt” that the threats are related to a sold-out pole dance show, said Strasbourg pastor Daniel Boessenbacher. A group of artists specialized in baroque music and performing arts rented the church a week ago for two performances of the setting of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s hymn to Mary, Stabat mater. Dance and pole dance interludes were part of the performances.

Program “coquettish but gentle”.
Phrases like “You’re going to hell” were also used. According to the group, tickets for the performances were sold out very quickly. The pastor of the Saint-Guillaume evangelical church described the program as “flirty but soft”. At the same time, he acknowledged that some viewers “didn’t like it”. “We are used to getting reactions, but not death threats,” said the 54-year-old.

However, he is not deterred by this and is convinced that the Church must open itself to the world. At the end of May and the beginning of June, two performances are already scheduled in the church, combining pole dancing with opera.
