A German burglar who was caught committing the crime in the Innviertel has now been proven to have committed a further 64 burglaries. The man was mainly after the houses and apartments of the deceased.
The 41-year-old German followed a treacherous pattern when choosing the Austrian crime scene. For the time being, he investigated on the basis of online obituaries whether there were relatives of the deceased who continued to live in the house. He then broke in during the funeral or up to three months later. The man was finally caught in the act of breaking into a residential building on November 3 in Aurolzmünster.
Huge damage
After extensive investigations by criminals from the police command of the district of Ried and the criminal investigation department of Upper Austria, it has now been proven that the suspect has committed a total of 64 burglaries in Upper Austria since May 2015 – mainly in the districts of Ried, Braunau and Schärding. . This resulted in a six-figure damage total, with five-figure amounts of stolen goods being returned to their rightful owners.
Hundred guns
In the apartment of the suspect in Germany, the Austrian detectives conducted a house search together with the German agents. Huge amounts of stolen goods could be secured there, which could be assigned to both the Austrian and German crime scenes. In concrete terms, this concerned hundreds of firearms, knives, daggers, various objects from both world wars (uniforms, badges, etc.), gold and silver jewellery, gold coins and dentures with gold fillings.
The suspect has been detained since November 24, 2022. He was reported to the public prosecutor’s office in Ried im Innkreis. During his interrogation, the man showed himself to be partially self-proclaimed.
