Ukrainian students at public and teacher training colleges (PH) will also not have to pay tuition fees in the winter semester 2023/24. A corresponding exemption is extended. The ministry will make up the resulting shortfall of 1.8 million euros.
“For more than a year, war has been raging in Ukraine, which has caused untold suffering for the Ukrainian people. This also affects Ukrainian students in Austria, whom we continue to relieve financially because of the war. This must remain unbureaucratic and direct,” Education Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) said in a broadcast.
Regulation applies to 2600 persons
About 2,600 Ukrainians are currently studying at Austria’s 22 public universities and 14 teacher training colleges. As a third-country national, they would normally have to pay EUR 726.72 per semester, which is double the tuition fee for Austrians. For residents of Germany, the reimbursement is only intended after exceeding the minimum study period and two tolerance semesters.
The obligation to pay contributions for Ukrainians was abolished at the beginning of the war. The ministry replaces the 1.8 million euros that the public universities and teacher training programs make. There are no general fee waivers for Ukrainians in colleges and private universities. However, these institutions often have their own help.
