A wave of cyber-attacks by pro-Russian hackers is hitting several federal states in Germany. The Schleswig-Holstein state portal was unavailable on Wednesday and the Brandenburg police website was disrupted. Hackers paralyzed websites of ministries or the police in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony on Tuesday.
“We assume that the attacks were coordinated in the different federal states,” said Saxony-Anhalt’s digital minister Lydia Hüskens (FDP) of the German news agency. She also spoke about events in Saarland.
Research into computer sabotage
In Lower Saxony, investigations have been launched into computer sabotage against strangers. A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice in Hanover explained that there was an increase in access from foreign addresses.
Investigations are being carried out in all directions, but there are indications of a pro-Russian background, says a spokesman for the Verden public prosecutor’s office. According to the Interior Ministry, many police websites in the state were unavailable on Tuesday. The cyber attack continues, but the websites are now accessible again.
“One or the other citizen will have circumstances,” said a police spokeswoman in Brandenburg, where the attack crippled online services. The National Investigation Department is investigating suspected computer sabotage. Because other federal states are affected, the police in Brandenburg are also in contact with the Federal Criminal Investigation Department, said the spokeswoman.
Sites temporarily unavailable
In Saxony-Anhalt, the state criminal investigation department started an investigation on Tuesday. “There was no damage, except that the websites were temporarily unavailable,” says Minister of Digital Affairs Hüskens. According to their information, the website of the superordinate state portal sachsen-anhalt.de had to be closed so that the state administration could continue to work with its IT system.
According to the ministry, hackers brought down the site with a so-called DDoS attack, that is, by deliberately overloading servers with massive requests. There were also occupation attacks in Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
