During a nightly search by mountain rescue services in Dorfgastein (Salzburg), a missing man was found dead in a steep ditch on Thursday. The 47-year-old was reported to the police by his wife from Lower Austria on Wednesday evening.
Because the woman had her husband’s mobile phone access data, the exact coordinates could be determined quickly, said Gerhard Kremser, Pongau district manager of the mountain rescue service.

The mobile phone of the Lower Austrian was found after midnight in a meadow not far from the steep Kranzbachgraben (1100 meters). In the subsequent search by the mountain rescue services of Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein, including mountain rescue dogs, the emergency services first discovered the man’s dog – in an extremely steep ditch that carries a lot of water. “He ran free on a leash,” says Kremser. The dead body was eventually found nearby by the mountain rescue team.
The rescue was carried out upwards by means of rope rescue and team pulley blocks. The Lower Austrian probably fell over the steep terrain in search of his dog. The Alpine Police determines the cause of the accident. The dog is temporarily taken care of by a mountain rescue dog handler.
Mountain rescuers from the municipality of Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein, dog teams from the mountain rescue service, the fire brigade and the police were present. The operation ended around 2:45 am.
