To protect against the cold: – Fruit growers put apricot blossoms under a layer of ice

Date:

It’s that time again: a cold snap is forcing fruit growers to take action. Because if all the blossoms freeze, there will be no apricots this year.

The blossoms of apricots and co can withstand minus one to two degrees for a short time. However, if it is cold for too long, they will be damaged. It has been freezing in recent nights – in Lake Kittsee, for example, it was minus two degrees. One of the largest apricot producers in the municipality, the organic farm Alexander Roszuczky, has therefore tried to protect its trees.

“At least we watered our small trees,” explains Karin Darnai from the organic farm. That no longer works with the big ones, with the little ones it is an attempt to save what can be saved.

Hope for little damage
“In about 10 days we will know the extent of the damage,” says Darnai. It’s not looking good at the moment. How high the yield of the approximately 4,000 trees will be this year is still in the stars. Incidentally, kiwis have recently also been growing on the organic farm. However, the first samples will only be available here in about two and a half years.

They should not be a replacement for the apricots, but rather a complementary offering. By the way, the Kittseer Apricot Association invites you to Apricot Hiking Day on April 15 – despite all the fear of its fruits. The new apricot queen is presented. Start is at 2 p.m. in Kittsee castle park.
