Parents convicted: daughter bitten, son locked in closet

Date:

A mother and her partner were brought before the Salzburg Regional Court to answer for draconian parenting measures: she bit her daughter on the arm and he repeatedly locked his son in the closet. “When I was a boy, that was normal,” the man muttered.

The unemployed defendant and mother of two bit her daughter on the forearm on March 20. “Is that so?” the judge asked. And the hitherto blameless woman only nods: she has no explanation, only an “sorry” escapes her lips. The judge quoted from the police interrogation that her “nerves were gone.”

Judge: “These are not teaching methods”
The partner of the co-defendant was less astute: according to the Public Prosecution Service, he allegedly locked his son in the closet three times. He also allegedly turned off the electricity, even though the children are afraid of the dark. The accusation was therefore deprivation of liberty: “When I was a boy, that was normal,” the suspect tried to explain, and he also spoke about the children: “They still jump around at three or four in the morning and turn around at the lights and “The judge replied: “Defendant, if you are so overwhelmed by raising children, you should seek help. Times have changed. These are not parenting methods in 2024.”

The children were four and six years old at the time of the crime. They are now housed in the SOS Children’s Village: “I am not allowed to visit them yet,” the mother added. According to the victim’s lawyer, the children were also in a “neglected condition and had language deficiencies.”

Both suspects convicted
Conviction for bodily harm to the woman including a fine of 200 euros. And six months suspended prison sentence for the local co-defendant. The two must also pay around 500 euros in damages. The verdicts are not legally binding.
