The German coalition government is currently debating a new heat law, which stipulates that from 2024 new and replaced heating installations must run on at least 65 percent renewable energy. The Greens mainly rely on the heat pump, which is powered with electricity from renewable energy sources. According to a media report, the EU is planning even stricter rules.
According to the “Bild”, the installation of new heating systems should be based almost exclusively on heat pumps by 2029 at the latest. The paper refers to a draft amendment to the “Ecodesign Directive”, which could be decided upon in the coming months. It states, among other things, that newly installed heating installations must have a minimum “115 percent efficiency”.
Stoves that have not achieved this goal may no longer be offered on the market. According to experts, oil and gas heaters are excluded because their efficiency is less than 100 percent. The European Commission declined to comment when asked by the newspaper.
Industry dissolves persistent myth
According to the industry, it is a myth that heat pumps only work with underfloor heating. Unfortunately, this is stubborn, said Katja Weinhold of the German Heat Pump Association (BWP) when asked by dpa. “The heat pump likes large heating surfaces, but does not necessarily need them,” the German heat pump association recently emphasized. The radiators in old buildings are often large enough to achieve a comfortable temperature with a low-temperature heat pump with good efficiency.
