After a woman was found dead in an apartment in Vienna-Ottakring on Tuesday, the victim’s friend has now been released. This was announced by spokeswoman for the public prosecutor’s office, Nina Bussek, on Thursday afternoon. He was initially suspected of involvement in the woman’s death.
According to Bussek, there was no urgent suspicion. “But the investigation is still ongoing,” she said. The murder charge is still pending. To take the 53-year-old into custody would require the existence of urgent suspicion. The evidence available so far, especially the preliminary result of the autopsy, would not be sufficient, Bussek said: “It cannot be ruled out at the moment that it was an accident that the woman fell.”
So far, there is no evidence that a violent attack was the cause of death. Therefore, no request has been made to the Regional Criminal Court to impose pre-trial detention.
Friend texted mom first
According to the police, the 57-year-old woman died of a blunt traumatic brain injury. The victim’s friend, a 53-year-old man, was at the scene. The man wrote his mother a text message on Tuesday evening that his partner was no longer moving. The mother then called the police. Officers from the Ottakring city command drove to the apartment on Gablenzgasse at 9:15 p.m., where the man opened the door for them.
The emergency services started resuscitation measures and notified the Viennese professional rescue service. A doctor was ultimately only able to determine the woman’s death.
Autopsy to clarify cause of death
The 53-year-old was transferred to a prison. He did not confess to the police questioning, the police reported two days after the incident in a broadcast. The Vienna Criminal Investigation Department is conducting further investigations, including into whether the injuries could also be the result of an accident. An autopsy should clarify the cause of death.
